CASTING

Do you believe in the magic of Christmas? Are you passionate about spreading smiles and Christmas cheer? Do you have what it takes to improvise and interact with children and adults alike, all whilst being on a heritage moving steam train?
If the answer is “YES” to all the above, then we would love to have you as part of our THE POLAR EXPRESS TRAIN RIDE™ Swanage Team! We are looking for triple threats; people who can sing, dance and act.
We are currently seeking, singing and dancing Stewards, Chefs, Conductors, Hobos, Elves and Hero Boys. All must be able to sing and act with an American accent. We’re also on the hunt for the big man himself… Santa! Availability is required from the 16th of November to the 24th of December.
Casting details
The Conductor
Male identifying, aged between 25-60; the Conductor is seemingly all-knowing father figure character, he has a task to complete, is punctual, follows rules and can’t be late. He uses his magic to spread excitement about Christmas and is a key member of the storyline.
This role does include singing and must be able to follow a basic dance routine; the conductor must talk in an American accent, and ideally can grow a moustache. All ethnicities welcome to apply.
Stewards/Chefs/Elves
16+ years all ethnicities; Upbeat and cheerful, these characters bring the train ride to life, and are the anchor of the show.
Good all-rounders who can sing, dance, improvise and entertain in a tight space.
They will also be required to serve hot chocolate and cookies during the performance and keep the carriage tidy.
Hobo
18+ years male identifying, all ethnicities welcome. A magical and ghostly individual who can make you question your belief in Father Christmas. Acting as the voice of reason and doubt. He’s invisible to adults, including the Conductor and Santa.
Must be a strong actor as they have key monologues within the script. Must talk in an American accent.
Hero Boy
12 + years male identifying, all ethnicities welcome. The main protagonist of the story which is narrated by his adult self. His character possesses the will to ‘believe’, but is full of doubt surrounding the existence of Santa and the magic of Christmas.
Must be confident with public interaction, proficient in learning lines and acting and able to adapt quickly using improvisation.
Santa
Santa lies at the center of this story, bringing magic and Christmas spirit to all who board the Polar Express.
Actors applying for Santa Claus must bring a magical performance and have an authentic white beard and hair. He must also bring the jolly appearance and experience for the part. Dialect is that of the Victorian era.
